My kids at the tailgate.

Chris Daughtry singing the National Anthem, on the big-ass TV. I couldn't see him from where I was standing, as I was waiting to try to get pictures of the team coming out of the locker room. He was actually pretty good. On-key, at least!

mmmmm.....Calico Soup. That'll warm you up before the game.

Oh, we're reachin', baby! And now? We're on our way to Miami!!!!!
This guy held up this sign almost constantly, and I was close to killing him. He only pulled it down right as every play started. It was a little annoying.

These two must have spent a fortune in money AND time on their face paint. The orange guy's head was completely orange, all the way around to the back. They were sitting in the row in front of us, next to four Saints fans (who left in the middle of the 3rd).

Bear down, Chicago Bears! Make every play clear the way to victory!
Bear down, Chicago Bears! Put up a fight with a might so fearlessly!
We'll never forget the way you thrilled the nation with your T formation.
Bear down, Chicago Bears, and let them know why you're wearing the crown
You're the pride and joy of Illinois. Chicago Bears, bear down!
This is one of the best pictures I took all day. Notice the score.
Plus, I sang the Bears fight song more times today than I have in the last 20 years put together. I'm a little hoarse.

After the game, waiting for the platform to be assembled for the presentation of George Halas NFC Championship Trophy.
I'll just start this off by admitting that I am not a sportswriter. This isn't going to be some post detailing every play. No Grossman did this, Thomas Jones did that.
I am a Bears fan. I've been going to games for more years than 20 than I care to admit. I'm not going to ramble on about the game. I'm going to ramble on about being at the game.
This day did not start this morning. It started last night, around 4:30 p.m., when I began tailgate preparations. I got up this morning at 7:00 a.m. to heat up the Calico Soup and the Sausage and Peppers (made for superstitious reasons; I made them for the inaugural New Soldier Field game, and my Sausage and Peppers were featured on WGN news). It took us a while, but we managed to load up the car with our food, our booze, our kids, my father, my nephew, my brother and his wife, and every warm piece of clothing we own, and we were on the road at 9:30 a.m. The parking lot opened at 10, yet we pulled in at 9:55, and promptly set up the tailgate.
By 10:30, the bloody Mary's were flowing, the hot chocolate was steaming, and the Calico Soup (recipe to follow...SO GOOD) was bubbling. By noon, the sausage and peppers were exuding steam, and we'd wiped out half a bottle of peppermint schnapps (tasty with the hot chocolate), almost an entire case of beer, and enough of the Calico Soup to entitle us to a quadruple bypass.
Meanwhile, we, along with every other fan in the parking lot, were trying to ignore the feeling. The anxiety. The FEAR that we would end up back at our cars at the end of the game in tears of sadness. And, we're trying not to hope too hard, because that just might jinx it.
But by halfway through the fourth quarter, we were all looking at each other. Some fans were screaming "Super Bears! Super Bowl!" yet I was afraid to get in on that chant. Not quite yet, I was thinking.
Then the snow began to fall hard. We weren't expecting it. The snow had been falling during the tailgate, but had stopped for a while, and the weatherman had predicted it would stop by 1 p.m. Yet, there it was, a near white-out. Chicago Bears weather. You cannot beat it. Snow. Cold. Mud. Screaming, delirious fans.
And once we knew we'd won it; once we knew there was no way in hell that the Saints were going to get a couple of touchdowns and a field goal in the three minutes remaining, we started to grin. We stopped being tense and started being happy.
There's something extraordinary about the swell of emotion at a game like this. Every member of the crowd is connected. It's just...damn. For once, I'm at a loss for words.
I'm praying for a Bears-Patriots rematch. The Super Bowl happens to fall on my 12th wedding anniversary, so I'm pretty sure I'm buying a new, gigantic, flat-screen television before February 4th.
I have in no way done justice to all of the thoughts that flowed through my head today with this post. But I knew if I didn't post tonight, I might never do it.
GO BEARS!!!!!
Viki, these are my two favirite teams. I guess I win either way. I honestly can't say who I'll root for.
nice report! admittedly, me and most of the nation were rooting for the saints, but there is nothing we can take away from the true blue (& orange) chicago bears fans out there. your tailgate scene reminded me of many similar and also snowy and terribly (beautifully) cold mornings at rich stadium in orchard park, ny, for the bills games. good times.
if my wifey werent from indy, i might be rooting for the bears this year. i'm predisposed to cheering against people like peyton manning, but it's a funny thing, what love can do. it's going to be a very good game, i think. it's a sort of new school old school thing. the colts arent the same colts that unitas led in the early days of the modern nfl, and the bears havent been a dominating team, save the shuffle year, since before the days of the modern nfl (well before). but these are still the colts and the bears, and even tho it's going to be played in miami, there is going to be something snowy about my memories of the upcoming game, regardless of the weather, and the longer time goes on.
i just wrote up a piece about the colts game...check it out if you want...not from the seats but from the couches. i just cant wait for the super bowl, and i'm so glad TO isnt a part of it.
im predisposed to cheering against people like peyton manning
I always wonder why people can't stand Manning. It's not like the guy got the job on some kind of fluke. No one can deny that he is probably the hardest working quarterback in the NFL. Nobody studies more film than he does. He constantly works on routes with his receivers.
But hey, at least your rooting for Indy in the Superbowl (even if it only for your wife). :-)

well, i wrote an entire article about it, called "Our heroes and those who love them."
and i admit to certain previously (by me) unseen traits of manning in my most recent writeup.
it takes a big person to admit his mistakes, and i am that big person. i am huge.*
*i stole that from "the office". :)
I think you watched the real Super Bowl today. The game in two weeks will be a letdown.
Congrats from a Vikings fan!
Congrats from another Vikings fan! To Da Bears!
I lived in Chicago during their last Super Bowl win and was sorta hoping for a Patriots rematch, but looks like they weren't good enough to make it to the big game this year! I also used to live in Indpls, but that was before they had an NFL team. So I'll be rooting for da Bears as they represent the NFC. Will we be getting a Super Bowl Shuffle re-mix this time around?
---I really enjoyed your article and the pictures - thanks. One thing - I don't wanna hear any lip from victorious Bear fans when we meet again in the fall. Show some respect, OK? :) Good Luck at the Super Bowl in Miami. Woo Hoo.
Now, now...
I think it would be great fun to watch Urlacher sing and dance. The Shuffle was great, much better than the song the Patriots came up with. Peyton Manning has been in quite a few hammy commercials lately, I wouldn't be surprised if the Colts do something for the Super Bowl. You have to be able to laugh at yourself, it shows you have confidence.
Yet, there it was, a near white-out. Chicago Bears weather.
I believe you meant "Green Bay Packers weather." Its a common mistake. : )
Seriously, as an almost-lifelong Wisconsin resident and Packers fan, there was a part of me hoping that the Saints would come back. But it was not meant to be. The Bears season this year reminded me of the 1985 season [when I was a Bears fan, back in the day], so it was good to see them back at the big game. I figured the Bears had a more than decent chance to upset the Patriots if that was the Super Bowl match up.
I was overjoyed, though, when I saw the Patriots lost to Indy. I live the in the heart of Patriot country, about 20 miles from Foxboro, and I've never experienced a fandom like the Patriots have: cocky, arrogant, thinking their team is entitled to the trophy no matter what. I had to let out a yelp of joy when Marlin Jackson got that final interception to seal the Colts victory.
I would have liked to have seen the Bears knock the Patriots down a few notches.
I think lots of people would have liked to see that.
Jason Ford- One easy way to hate Manning, I am a Georgia Bulldawg Fan.
GO BEARS! DAAAAAAAAAAAAA BEARS!!
As long as you have a solid reason. :-)
