It's happening. Even if no one shows up, it's happening. We are having a Vinemeet in Chicago.
This Vinemeet will be happening at the same time as the world-famous Chicago Blues Fest (see link for schedule).
Once we get closer, I will announce some kind of schedule that will include attending the Blues Fest (free!), visiting some of Chicago's amazing museums (not too expensive), and lots of bar-hopping and various other fun and entertaining stuff.
I will also be asking people to sign up to cover some of the things we attend, all assignment-desk style. There's the possibility of getting some press passes to various events, including Blues Fest, so that Newsvine writers can interview some of the performers. It can happen if we make it happen.
Travel arrangements are up to you, but here are some hotels that are in the Grant Park area (that's where the Blues Fest happens):
Congress Plaza Hotel. Somewhat dumpy, but really @!$%#ing cool if you wander around a bit. Rates are advertised for that time period at $159/night. It's directly across from Grant Park. It's old as the hills and seriously needs a rehab, but there's some fantastic mosaics that I am dying to photograph. I've stayed here before, though it's been years, and I walk by at least once a week.
The Hotel Blake looks very cool. Priced around $184/night, it's just a few blocks walk from Blues Fest and close to public transportation.
I'm trying hard not to get carried away with swanky hotels and trying to keep the cost under $200/night, so there are some places I would love for everyone to stay in so I can party there, but I'm leaving them out.
And, in fact, I'm just going to stop there because there are so many freakin' hotels in Chicago I don't even know how to continue.
I think what I need is some kind of idea of who is coming and what they're willing to spend on hotel rooms. There's always the option of sharing a room with some random Newsviner (I got my own room at the first Vinemeet I attended in Columbus, but ended up lying in a big King sized bed with a couple of newly-minted best friends until the sun came up, talking about god knows what. My own room was just a place to keep my suitcase). For the incredibly financially strapped, I do have some space I can make available (please email me privately about that).
I will entertain at least one evening in an as-yet-to-be-decided location. Probably Friday.
I need to know:
If you're coming.
What your hotel price range is and if you're willing to share a room with another Viner.
And from there I can move forward on hotels. If we get enough people, we may be able to secure a special hotel rate.
C'mon, peeps. Who's in?
I think you can count me and Sue in (Chicago's not that far to drive from here)
:)
Can't go to Chicago (too many book commitments right now) but I will definitely show if a Vinemeet is ever held in the Seattle area.
Spent all the company cash sending Gayla the Bookkeeper to DC, anyway. (laughs)
I have been to Chicago once, though. I had to go to Gary to take some pictures for an article back in the 80's. *The Decline of Gary, Indiana*
I heartily recommend anyone considering going to Chicago for this Vinemeet to GO, however. Gary is NOT Chicago by any means and with a local to guide you around, a good time is guaranteed for all. I will look forward to the usual crazy/fun pictures that are bound to appear.
Can't go to Chicago (too many book commitments right now) but I will definitely show if a Vinemeet is ever held in the Seattle area.
Yeah, we should do this. This summer.
I nominate Tyler to be in charge of this.
Seattle Vinemeet?! Oh I can be there easily. 2 hr drive ;) :) Count me in if that happens!
How long stayin in Seattle? Yea let me know if something happens and I'll try and make the venture up boring I-5 North.
Viki, my husband is rolling his eyes at me but I think you can plan on us coming :)
damn I will go work on the corner for the next week or so, so thatI can get enough funds to get there. I will make it no matter what. hell it shouold be prtty warm, so I can sleep in any of the presidents.
I think we are planning on coming depending on finances due to the wedding. I will do my best though :-)
Well my presence has been demanded, guess that settles that...
We would like to stay under $100 on a room if possible. My fiance says no sharing of room for reasons of nakedness :-) What area are you thinking everyone should stay in? I stayed at the W in January and while a neat place I would never stay again, way too fancy and chic for our tastes. The drive is only about 6 hours for us from Cincy so that is not so bad.
reasons of nakedness
That sounds like my husband's reasoning for not sharing a room :)
Yep, should only take you about 6 hours. I am 4ish from you and 2ish from Chicago :)
I stayed at the W in January and while a neat place I would never stay again
Is it mad dark and lunge-club like? The Seattle W is crazy, I always feel like there's an action movie about to break out.
Yes it was mad dark and lounge club like. Yeah it was crazy they even sold vibrators at the hotel shop! We definitely felt out of place...
Yeah it was crazy they even sold vibrators at the hotel shop!
Srsly?
I think I need to check out the Seattle one again.
Yeah there was a bondage kit for sale also maybe you could invite Megan to the Seattle one :-)
Sorry that was a low blow...
Nikki, I did find some other hotels with rates around $100 on hotwire.com. I am still searching on other sites but if I find more, I will let you know :)
Yeah there was a bondage kit for sale also maybe you could invite Megan to the Seattle one :-)
Dag.
Thanks Stephanie, your comment didn't show up until today for me.
Sorry Tyler sometimes I can't help myself :-)
Is there one that can be done in Charlotte, NC or Raleigh. NC - great weather and really a nice area.
Well if it can be set up for the last quarter I will be there!
It's happening.
I don't believe you.
Even if no one shows up, it's happening.
heh.
We are having a Vinemeet in Chicago.
Video, or it never happened.
If a Vinemeet is planned in Chicago and no one comes....does it make any sound?
Nah... but it still echoes every year.
Viki sounds like one of my very good friends. She has the loudest laugh I have ever heard and it only gets louder when she is drunk :)
I've been accused of being loud
Accurate.
Well then,. lets have a "Loud" party!!! I bet I could help break some glass!lol
probably with your forehead, you party animal! lmao
What forehead....lol
ha, lol
I would certainly like to come. Would have to run it by my husband, first. Do we have to take a plane? Rhetorical? I live just over in Michigan and I know it is a good ride on the bike. We rode to Milwaukee last year to the Harley, 105th.
My husband might really enjoy it if we could ride. Only room for two though, as we have no basket on the front.
Very interested, but still pondering it. What is that assignment that we have to do?
ill try to make as well
We'll see : )
Viki,
Post a schedule (as a broad, flexible outline type form...)
Post a MAP of area in question (with the important stuff highlighted) so those of us who don't know diddly about Chitown can know when to tell them to &%$#@! off, on priceline or expedia or whatever.
viki: did you get my e-mail about possible hotels.
sounds great, not a problem on the wait!
This sounds interesting - is there an agenda? A meeting room/place other than a bar?
What about hotels on Michigan Avenue - some that would be more or less central to the Meet itself.
A. Macarthur
I am in! defenately showing up! I am willing to squeeze into any corner to sleep, also willing to share a room, thats not problem.
im in. I live an hour south of Chicago. Keep me posted, please.
Must be near my old stomping grounds...
hmmmm, got a spare room or two to rent, cheap? lol
that depends....are you a drug crazed axe murderer and do you watch FOX news?
are you a drug crazed axe murderer and do you watch FOX news?
axe murderer AND watch FOX? That's a pretty narrow set of people...I would think..and hope...heh
No, but we probably would become drug-crazed axe murderers if we watched Fox News; In fact, we haven't had cable in about a year now, so we watch all our stuff on the internet, or our collection of various movies. lol
fox noise is blocked on my channel line up...shooting you a friends request Sue
accepted...
My hubby and I are planning to be there :)
I am coming but I don't know if I am driving or flying. It's about a 12 drive from where I live but I bet I could leave on Wednesday and take my time stopping and sightseeing along the way.
I will want my own hotel room for personal reasons but it would be great for me to be in a hotel with other Viners as I don't want to get lost or left out from all the fun.
I still can't believe I'm going to do this. I'm scared to death just thinking about it!
I am a little nervous too ..but cant pass up meeting you ;)
I am so excited to meet everyone :) My husband says I have to get a job for us to be able to go...BLUGH! So, I will have to do it I guess.
My fiance needs to put in some overtime for us to be able to go!
I need to start on my diet recipes before this unless you all promise to keep the cameras at home LOL !!
Starting my diet today. I gained another 6 lbs in a month! OMGsh! This new medicine is so freaking crazy! GRR!
Sorry about the diet/medicine snafu...but you're going to chitown...you know the OTHER "real pizza" capital of the world!
Oh yeah! and sausages too, and....
sorry MsBrady, I am going to take a whole lot of pictures.
and some of the best delis in the known universe!
like, oh yeah baby, I plan to come back to LA 10 pounds heavier and with the worst hangover ever.
LOL ... makes a note to diet extra now!
just though, about this, hope I don't get air sick on the way back home, I would not like to be the person sitting next to me.
Puts some motion sickness pills in purse for HCG :D it might help..
<<note to self: do not make an ass of yourself in front of all you vine friends, wait make an ass of my self, no damn I forgot.
personal reasons being, either she snores real loud, has gas problems, or is gonna go get her some chicago nookie; ROFL; :-D
Susan, you'd be a big reason for my going.....I would be honored to meet you:) I want to send you my number but don't know how...please go to my page and send me a link somehow or message me so I can give it to you....I MISS YOU!!!
Shoot, I'd love to come, but we can only afford for either Tyler or me to come. I think Tyler's more popular these days. Maybe we should have a dance off for it.
so carpool and split a room, Doug and I are trying to work out carpool and room arrangements too, and we are probably financially less well off then you. Besides, as a newsvine boss, your presence, is required, nay, demanded; :-P
That was hilarious!
but we can only afford for either Tyler or me to come.
Fly yourself out with that Wikipedia page money.
so carpool and split a room
OMG. There's no way he would do that, but I'd be down. For the carpooling leastways.
Also: Seattle.
Also, no way am I entering into a dance-off with someone that much shorter than me. I'll look silly.
To bad we cant put our earnings towards the good cause of sending both tyler and Calvin ..you could have mine ..but that wont get you to far :D
wouldn't it be cheaper in the long run paula for you and hubby to split the cost of a room with us instead of wasting gas going back and forth two hours each way? Try that one on him... (snickers)
I will pass that on to him ..I think the no beer if we drive home may work too giggles
Sick Humor from Robert:
Question:
'hmmmm, got a spare room or two to rent, cheap? lol'
Answer:
'that depends....are you a drug crazed axe murderer and do you watch FOX news?'
Final answer: 'If you're an axe murderer, no problem. Can provide a room, possibly a grindstone. If you watch Fox News, not a chance.'
rofl :-)
that's OK, Tyler. I'll buy you a drink when we get there
Doug
that's OK, Tyler. I'll buy you a drink when we get there
Only one. I'm very different from Calvin. :)
I'm starting to warm up to the idea of playing the "travel like a hobo" game and hitchhiking my way cross country (and through customs...which would be the tricky bit I suppose), to get to the Vinemeet...but regardless, my mind is set, I WILL make it...some way...somehow...and if I do end up thumbin' it....I'll be wearing my Drollhouse t-shirt the whole way and turn it into a photo project hehe.
dang if only I had the time I would do the same, damn I am going to have to host next year vinemeet!
day by day this looks like it is becoming a beast of a vinemeet, and to think that I was going to treat everybody to the srimp cocktail I make, everybody that has trieed it here lves it, but at this rate it look like it would have to be a massive bucket of shrimps.
Can't wait with excitement!
I live in Chicago and I will be there.
is there a train shuttle with a hotel nearby outside of chicago? Doug was thinking that it might be easier to take something like that in, instead of driving all over. He's been to Chicago, and knows what driving in it is like. The way he figures it, one big party in the social car of the train.....lol
one big party in the social car of the train.....lol
lol!
Hey Viki,
Are there any of those Amerisuites, or other extended stay type "suite" set ups near the area?
I wanna know one thing? How are we gonna recognise one another? Wear white T's that have I'm a viner on them, or maybe find shirts with vines already on them? And where do we want to hook up, and at what time? Oops, I guess that's 3 things; lol
yes, yes, yes, there is still time to figure all this out, but I do like the t-shirt with "I AM A VINER" them.
Any chance for a weekend Vine Meet in Seattle on the first or second weekend after Labor Day when travel volumes and possibly prices will be down?
A. Macarthur
Has anyone started making hotel reservations yet? I was wondering where some people might be staying. Does anyone know of any pet friendly hotels for large dogs?
La Casa VIKI! HA HA
60 pound puppie :-)
We could board her but with her having diabetes it is tough to do. Most places anymore don't want to do shots. Plus she needs to stick to her diet to get her insulin on a regular basis and when she is boarded then she won't eat so it messes her up pretty bad. If we can take her with us we prefer to do that.
A lot of super 8s are becoming pet friendly. We stayed in one while visiting my daughter in wisconsin, they charge like ten bucks extra a night per pet, but they are ok places. One usually gets the ground floor rooms that way, lol
Thanks Sue!
Nikki, Let me know what you guys decide. We might bring my puppy with us. She is a shih tzu and is the worlds biggest baby. We have left her in the past but she protests by not eating.
She will probably be going with us as of right now. If I can find a hotel that will allow her...
I will let you know...
Super 8 prices are usually pretty reasonable, but, in a big city, don't leave anything valuable laying around. They do have room safes now as well. But they charge for the use of those too, so, take your valuables with ya, lol
Stephanie,
I found the Sheraton Chicago Hotel and Towers for 185 a night on Hotels.com. They accept pets and are near the Navy Pier.
I found some cheaper places that are farther north on 41. Most of them are about 15 miles from Grant Park and the area around Navy Pier.
There is a Residence Inn about 9 miles from Grant Park that accepts pets and it is 139 a night.
There is a Doubletree that is 14 miles from Grant Park that accepts pets and it is 118 a night...
Anybody else??
from what viki had told me that is far from where her house is, but she has been busy, waiting on her post for hotels near.
Yes I am waiting also...
still waiting....
still waiting....
trying to be patient :-)
Anouncement coming soon, I want one in my neck of the woods, here in LA. I would say 4 months after the chi town meet!
waiting...
waiting...
patience is my virtue!
Sorr, check out my new group I think you might like it!
there is still time, no problem!
Ok I found a place more in our price range and they will let us bring our dog. There is a Hilton Garden Inn near Ohare for $84 a night. They have a pool and free wireless internet. There is also a kids pool so it may keep all the kiddies out of the regular pool. There is free self parking there which is a nice thing in Chicago. I have stayed at many Hilton Garden Inns and they are always very nice.
They do ask for a $75 non refundable deposit for pets but that is cheaper than what it would cost us to board her for the weekend. Now it is around 16 miles from Grant Park so it is quite a distance but with the free parking that lets us drive somewhere then pay for parking if we need to.
We are planning on coming up on the Friday before (working a half a day) so we will be there Friday night if anything is going on. On Saturday we are going to Shedd Aquarium since I didn't get to go in January. The Oceanarium is opening back up in a week so I will get to see all that I wanted to. So Saturday night is free for us.
Looking forward to meeting lots of folks!
Sounds great, i am tryng to get a package deal, so I will see if I can get the Hilton Inn!
Yeah am looking foreward to meeting everybody as well!
If some of us stay in the same area then we can all ride together and share parking costs once downtown or split the price of a cab...
I was thinking of the same thing, or rent a minivan!?
I am bringing my car and don't mind driving. It can fit 5 people comfortably. The parking at the Hilton Garden Inn I mentioned is free and it is self parking so that is nice.
even better, thats great!
We can get all day parking at Grant Park or Navy Pier for around $25 so if there is a few people in the car splitting won't be too bad.
We have changed our plans a bit. We are going to Shedd Aquarium on Sunday since it is a free day. So that leaves us with Saturday open. I am not sure what the plans are or if people are going to Grant park all day that day or not. I know Jeff and I wanted to spend some time on Navy Pier walking it. We love to be near the lake....
I wish we could afford one of the hotels there near the lake but the way it stands we will get 2 nights at Hilton with free parking for less than one night at one of the downtown hotels.
my plans are completely open, I have to catch a game at wrigley though!
@ HCG76 - The MN Twins are playing the Cubs that weekend at Wrigley...
hopefully it will be good for the Twins! :)
I really don't care whio wins, I just want to catch a game there! but ok GO TWINS!
I am trying to convince my husband to stay the night on Saturday night. He doesn't want to b/c I still don't have a consistant job. I will know for sure by the end of this week if I will have one at that point or not. So, maybe after Friday, I might know a little better.
Steph,
Maybe you need to remind him and you, perhaps, that this is an ideal situation for the two of you to get away from the kids and have a romantic, exciting weekend together and get FREAKY! (I'm sure (at least I hope) like you used to). It would probably do both of you some good. For God's sake, you don't have to stay at the most expensive place in town--surely a motel 6 or 8 would do ;) Just need a shower and a bed....
You forgot the most important part, one of those fancy detachable shower heads ;)
