New Magazine Announcement: The News Viner

This is something I've been wanted to do for quite some time. A discussion about something I seeded yesterday has spurred me to finally put this into action.

I seek to create a publication of sorts within Newsvine that features the best original writing by Newsvine users. Any and all subjects are welcome.

The publication will take the form of a group: The News Viner.

The group is not open to membership.

Please do not request to join the group. It is not necessary to be a member to read what's been selected for publication, nor to submit your work for consideration. When a piece has been accepted, the author will publish it to Newsvine (if they haven't already) and I will clip it to the group myself.

To read the work selected for inclusion in The News Viner, you simply need to watchlist the group. You can also create a front-page module for the group by clicking "Create New Module" and entering the group's RSS feed (http://bestwriting.newsvine.com/_feeds/rss2/master?articles). You can place the module wherever you'd like on your own front page.

So, how does content get published by the magazine?

In one of three ways.

1. I stumble across great content that should be published in the "magazine." I will contact the author and ask permission for it to be included.

2. A user contacts me and suggests a piece be published in the "magazine." Again, I will contact the author and ask permission before clipping it to the group.

3. User submission. Details on the submission process and submission guidelines will be outlined in a separate article, but basically, one would email me with a link to the piece they are submitting (if already published to Newsvine) or attach a document containing the piece. There is no guarantee that a piece will be accepted. This works the same way it does if you submit a piece to a "regular" publication--a magazine, a journal of fiction or poetry, etc. If your piece is not accepted, you will receive a standard rejection notice.

What kind of content is The News Viner looking for?

The model is The New Yorker magazine. If you're familiar with The New Yorker, you know that it publishes everything from 12-page investigative pieces on political issues to cartoons and photographs.

The News Viner will accept political pieces, poetry and fiction, essays on any subject, interviews, book, music, film, television and arts reviews, editorials and opinion pieces, profiles, humor pieces, and more. And even the occasional cartoon.

I look forward to highlighting the best writing by Newsvine users, especially since the best writing is often ignored in favor of the sensational.

Who is responsible for accepting or rejecting the submissions?

Right now, that's me. As a teacher of fiction at Columbia College in Chicago, a weekly columnist for my local paper, as well as a freelance writer for multiple publications and having acted as editor for several writing contests and traditional publications, I feel I am qualified to do so. Depending on how many submissions are received, I may need to move to an editorial-board model. I may occasionally ask other Newsviners to act as a guest editor from time to time. I may ask other viners who are more skilled at recognizing, say, a great photograph than I might be to take a look at something if I'm not sure.

Why are you doing this?

Because I hate that some of the very best original writing published to Newsvine is so often ignored by the majority of users. I want to do something positive for the Newsvine community by highlighting the work of our best writers. I hope to also encourage some of these writers to begin submitting their work to standard publications. I've used articles I've posted to Newsvine over the years as clips when applying for writing jobs. You can too, and you can point out to editors that your pieces have been selected for inclusion in a Newsvine magazine focused on featuring the best writing on the website.

How often will content be published?

No idea. It could be several times a day, it could be a few times per week. It all depends on what is submitted and accepted, or what's suggested by other users. My goal would be to publish one item per day.

I can't wait! When can I start submitting my stuff?

I will publish a separate article with submission guidelines and rules. Do not send anything to me before you read those guidelines. I will link to the guidelines here once they are complete and published. It's probably going to be a few days at least.

The Magazine needs a cool avatar! Why don't you create one?

I know! I'm terrible at that stuff. Feel free to create an avatar and send it to me for consideration. Credit will be given to the avatar creator.

If you are interested in submitting your work for consideration, keep your eyes open for the submission guidelines.

Thanks!

We've been doing this very thing for months.

The most current "issue" was posted yesterday ...

Great. I'll take a look. This isn't really a contest, however. It's more in the form of a magazine. All articles will be posted by their writers, and clipped to the group if they are accepted for publication.

But that's awesome. Thanks.

Thank you, Viki. I've been waiting for a good fit at Newsvine, and perhaps this will be like your classrooms -- where good writing gets recognized, but also introduces examples from which to learn, to borrow devices from each other. At least, that'll be on my syllabus! I'm a perpetual student, it seems.

While it is not a contest, in many ways, the guidelines and idea are similar to a contest. I was supposed to have submitted a story in the last challenge of A. Mac's and Sara G's challenges. But, a few days after starting to mull about what I was going to write, my father passed away from a heart attack. I even wrote an article about it. The article started with a poem about my father that was not edited except as I wrote it. I have to update something in the article though and I keep forgetting to do so. I will update it as soon as I post this.

Viki - wonderful idea and I just know it will be successful. There are so many fabulous writers here, many of whom I probably haven't even seen. Some that I know of, but because they keep to themselves for the most part, don't get a lot of the attention they so deserve. They will get it for sure by your doing this for all of NV. Kudo. A very productive move on your part!

I know I am late to the party...but awesome idea here Viki...btw does this include 'artists/crafter's' that we have here on the vine? I am in the Hobbies and Crafts group and there are some very talented viners here at NV. Just thought I would let you know so you can keep an eye open for that talent as well...

Hope things are going better for you Tom...It is hard losing a parent...I have lost both of mine in the last 5 years, it's tough but you will go on...

Nice to see you, dcstone. It includes all quality writing. I think as it progresses, we can include more. I'd love to include high-quality photographs, art, textile arts, etc. There is definitely a lot of talent here on the Vine, and it's not just all about writing.

Now you have gone and done it. I sure hope this works as well as I think it might. It is what I have tried and tried to get Newsvine the entity to do but they never seemed up to the task. Whether you realize it or not you may be offering to found the kind of edited, supervised, practical and hopefully successful format that Newsvine should have had all along. I guess college journalism professors are worthwhile after all. Thank you Viki Babbles Gonia for being here and doing this. Superb effort!

BTW, this should be posted to all of Newsvine.

Haha! I was just thinking this morning, "I have posted a lot of meta stuff in the last week. Where the heck has oldfogey been?" :p

I think it just might work, and I think that we can have both the Newsvine as it exists, as well as use the tools provided to create new ways of using it.

I wanted to publish it to all of Newsvine, because I'd like to get as much exposure to it as possible, but I also need to start off slowly. Eventually, word-of-mouth will expose it to the wider Newsvine world. When it's time.

    Oh, my.

I have been needing something positive in my life the past five months, and this may just be the ticket! I've been on the verge of running out of tears, so here's to "hope."

I do have a question for you, Viki. If someone is fortunate enough to have something accepted, will it be accepted as our Newsvine name or will we be allowed to use the name we use when writing?

For example, here on Newsvine, I'm Soosalah. Elsewhere, I use my initials and last name. Just a question.

    Thank you.

    Soosalah,

If someone has something accepted for publication by the magazine, it will be posted by the user, and clipped to the group by me. So, it will have your Newsvine name on it.

However, you can insert a byline at the top of the text that states your real name or initials or whatever you wish if you'd like it to be more easily identified by people outside of Newsvine as a piece of your writing.

Hmm. Recipes are difficult. I suppose if they took the form of a how-to piece. Like this one (self-promotion alert). Though, quite frankly, if I submitted that for inclusion in the magazine, I wouldn't accept it without requiring a few rewrites.

But just a simple recipe with an ingredients list and the steps, I think we're going to have to say no to that. It would have to be judged upon how good the dish turned out, right?

We'll have to look at it on a case-by-case basis.

Love this idea, Viki. My dream is to make it into the magazine! FYI: in 1989 I was interviewed by "New Yorker" and the article appeared in the April 10, 1989 issue. I lived in NY at the time. I came home from work one day to find a message on my answering machine, from a nice lady in Virginia who'd read the article because a friend had seen it and realized she'd be interested (the article was about my raising rats and mice).

That is how I "met" the person you all know as Remote Viewer - true story.

Hmm. I like it... reminds me a bit of The Armchair Traveler group (a personal favorite).

Umm, good luck on promoting the group, I wish there were an easy way for you to 'brand' articles that have been clipped to the group, like Good News Wednesday includes their name in the title (do they still do that?) and the Photographers group activities make a disclaimer in the article or in the title (or both) - we were even playing with the idea of adding a 'badge', or Foto Friday graphic, to each of the articles. Branding seems to be key.

I'm thinking of having users accepted for publication add a line at the beginning of their article:

Selected for publication in The News Viner, a Newsvine magazine devoted to quality writing.

That way, anyone happening upon it would say "What's that?"

      I'm still tossing it around.

I'm not really in favor of anyone adding anything to the title, just for continuity's sake.

I love the concept however you decide to do it. I believe it will give people not only the incentive to write articles but, to get some sort of recognition for it. I look forward to reading our first "The News Viner" and to see some of my friends in it. And, to read some good article from people that I haven't met. Thank you. :-)

I'm not in favor of titles additions either ... happens anyway. It does add additional context.

I think it works great for Foto-Friday. It's an instant notice to me that something in my bottom tracker is a Foto-Friday submission (believe it or not, I often look but don't have time to comment).

I just think in this context, it will have a detrimental effect on the article as a whole. I'd like the title to stand with the work itself.

To me it makes sense to identify the individual articles as they appear on the front page as part of a larger project, which users won't know until they click-through, unless they access them from the group page. Having something in the title is the only way to differentiate those titles as users skim through the front page or their convo tracker.

I think that's one of the shortcomings of groups in general, I rarely remember to check the group pages, rather I scan the front page, check the tracker, check my watchlisted authors, and then maybe remember to check my groups once in a blue moon if I haven't already jumped into the discussion somewhere else (which is most of the time).

But hey, you're the editor. The monthly sales figures fall squarely on your shoulders, now :)

I'm thinking of having users accepted for publication add a line at the beginning of their article:

Selected for publication in The News Viner, a Newsvine magazine devoted to quality writing.

That way, anyone happening upon it would say "What's that?"

That's a great idea. With Newsviner's Picks it was akward sometimes when I'd tell them they'd been honored by Newsviner's Picks and they'd say 1) great followed by 2) what's that?

I'll certainly be recommending to you some of those we'd normally clip to our own group.

Infohack: Yeah, it's a tough one. Haven't quite decided how to handle it yet.

Thanks Scott. Look forward to the submissions.

      it's a tough one.

.. which is why I wished for an easy way.

Following Scott, I'll be submitting articles from NVP, too. Looking into working with other group administrators (the good ones), making it a more collective effort in the absence of group members, will probably be beneficial.

      Doin it! Done!

Submission guidelines should be up sometime tomorrow. I've been revising things, and I've asked someone for their help and guidance (and to serve as a great balance for me), so we're hashing things out.

We're going to post a few initial picks right after we post submission guidelines.

More than anything else, I want to give people something to work towards. It makes me feel great to hear you say you need incentive. I look forward to reading your submissions.

Thanks Dennis. I haven't posted the submission guidelines yet, but I'd prefer that suggestions be made to me via email. If a suggested piece isn't chosen, then that writer is aware their piece was suggested and rejected.

That would be like someone submitting the draft of my novel to an agent without my knowledge, and that agent sending me a rejection letter.

      Thanks.

BTW, there was a privately organized 'awards program' last year. Very simple, even now, if you are interested in seeing someone's article or seed be recognized you can join and clip it to the 'Vinny Awards' Group for consideration.

      Great idea Viki.

As a writer ( I hardly ever seed), I know how frustrating it can be to put your heart and soul into a piece and not have it read. I know of other writers who feel the same way. This is a wonderful opportunity for all the NV writers to get the recognition they deserve.

Thanks Perrie. I'm really hoping it works out well. There will certainly be some kinks in the beginning, but I think in the long run, it will be fantastic. I can't wait to see some of the submissions!
